Square D struggled with high worker’s compensation claims and costs due to poor musculoskeletal health.
Upon contacting ErgoPlus for services, this facility was looking for solutions to combat high workers compensation claims and costs. The company had experienced 34 medical MSD cases with high severity and lost time rates.
Although there was an active safety team, there was not a formal process in place to reduce the risks associated with these injuries. There was no ergonomics team and no process to identify ergonomic improvement opportunities. Workplace athletes weren’t trained in proper body mechanics, ergonomics, or self-care best practices.
The healthcare process was just as reactive as the ergonomics process and workplace athlete training. There was no early reporting of fatigue in order to put preventive measures in place. Left unchecked, these MSD risk factors eventually led to a steady stream of frustrating, costly, and painful injuries.
In other words, there was no formal process in place to prevent the most common and costly injuries at the facility — musculoskeletal disorders.
To meet these challenges, this Square D facility partnered closely with ErgoPlus injury prevention specialist, Mark Middlesworth. Mark is the owner and president of ErgoPlus. He is a 1982 Purdue University athletic training graduate, and received his Master’s Degree in 1983 from Syracuse University.
Square D chose ErgoPlus to implement a total musculoskeletal health solution.
ErgoPlus injury prevention specialist Mark Middlesworth was embedded directly onsite at the Square D facility to implement the ErgoPlus System.
Ergonomics is the science of designing the workplace, keeping in mind the capabilities and limitations of workers. Poor worksite design leads to fatigued, frustrated and hurting workers.
A systematic ergonomics improvement process improves worksite design, removing risk factors that lead to musculoskeletal injuries and allows for improved human performance and productivity.
Our onsite injury prevention specialists are Certified Athletic Trainers, and they bring the best principles of sports medicine into the workplace. This approach is driven by engaging employees one-on-one to identify and resolve the root cause of fatigue and discomfort.
This model of proactive, preventive healthcare will create far more value for your organization than reactively waiting to treat the injuries that will inevitably occur in the traditional, reactive model.
The ErgoPlus System empowered Square D to lower all causative risk factors that lead to musculoskeletal injuries, not leaving anything to chance.
For over twenty years, Square D has remained dedicated to preventing unnecessary musculoskeletal injuries and enhancing human performance at their facility. And their dedication is paying off. Here are the results of our ongoing partnership with this Square D facility.
We continually earn the right to serve, and as the results indicate, our services gain value over time. Our weekly dedication to the prevention process is what generates longterm results. In fact, even with the tremendous success Square D has had, Tom Doty and the rest of the Square D team remains prevention-focused and hungry for continuous improvement. We’re proud to serve at their side.
“Our ErgoPlus consultant has established a great rapport with our union shop employees. In addition to addressing individual ergonomic work concerns, he has the confidence of our employees, that they seek him out for non-work related concerns also. The performance of our consultant (Mark) has been nothing less than professionalism at its best. Whether dealing with some contentious situation, or conducting quantitative tasks to determine exposure level, we always get his best. We have seen a great decline in incident rates related to ergonomic considerations as we furthered our relationship with ErgoPlus. We now might have none or one MSD in a year, which is a huge improvement.”
